AISI 321 Stainless Steel Pipe is a titanium-stabilized austenitic stainless steel grade, designed to provide improved resistance to intergranular corrosion after exposure to temperatures in the chromium carbide precipitation range (425-850°C). It's a derivative of the popular 304 stainless steel with added titanium.

AISI 321 Stainless Steel Pipe is a titanium-stabilized austenitic stainless steel grade, designed to provide improved resistance to intergranular corrosion after exposure to temperatures in the chromium carbide precipitation range (425-850°C). It's a derivative of the popular 304 stainless steel with added titanium.

Composition:

The typical chemical composition of 321 Stainless Steel includes:

- Chromium (Cr): Around 17% to 19%, providing basic corrosion resistance.

- Nickel (Ni): Approximately 9% to 12%, contributing to its austenitic structure and enhanced corrosion resistance.

- Titanium (Ti): Up to 0.7%, which acts as a stabilizing agent to prevent the formation of chromium carbides at grain boundaries.

- Carbon (C), Manganese (Mn), Silicon (Si), Phosphorus (P), and Sulfur (S) are present in trace amounts.

Characteristics:

1. Corrosion Resistance: Offers good general corrosion resistance similar to 304 stainless steel, along with enhanced resistance to intergranular corrosion due to the presence of titanium.

2. Heat Resistance: Exhibits better high-temperature strength and creep resistance compared to 304 stainless steel, making it suitable for applications where sustained temperatures above 800°F (427°C) are expected.

3. Stress-Corrosion Cracking Resistance: Improved resistance to stress-corrosion cracking when compared to unstabilized grades like 304.

4. Weldability: Can be readily welded using standard fusion methods; however, preheating and post-weld heat treatments may not be necessary due to titanium stabilization.

5. Formability: Similar formability and ductility to other austenitic stainless steels, allowing it to be formed into pipes easily.

Use:

1. Chemical Processing Industry: Components in piping systems and vessels exposed to elevated temperatures and corrosive environments.

2. Aerospace and Aircraft Industry: In high-temperature components such as exhaust manifolds, jet engine parts, and structural components.

3. Power Generation: For superheater and reheater tubes, boiler components, and furnace parts that experience high temperatures and potential for thermal cycling.

4. Petrochemical Industry: Equipment that requires both corrosion resistance and high-temperature strength, including heat exchangers, process piping, and flue gas desulfurization systems.

5. Food Processing Industry: High-temperature equipment or parts that require regular cleaning and sanitizing with hot water or steam.
